Social Work Program

Program introduction:

“Social work” program started its educational operation by accepting the first admission students in 1997, based on the “Special permission to hold educational operation” issued to MUST by Policy and Regulatory Authority of Science, Technology, and Higher Education of Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science. MUST is the first university to prepare social work professionals in Mongolia. Today, the university is holding Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral programs of “Social work” profession. “Social work: higher education standard” developed by the university and approved by National Center of Standardization and Metrology in 2009 has been implemented in the professional program since. During 22 years of preparing professionals, 710 Bachelors, 128 Masters, and 4 Doctors (Ph. D) have graduated from this program. 

    “Social work” Bachelor program is accredited with the order of the 1st of September, 2014 of National Council for Education Accreditation of Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science. 

 

  1. Study orientation of the program: 

 

In accordance with the special permission of Minister of Education, Culture, and Science for the training course, following courses are being held:

  • Bachelor for “Social work” program (4 years), 

  • Research and professional master in “Social work /General/” program (1.5-2 years), 

  • Research and professional master in “Social work administration” program (1.5-2 years), 

  • Research and professional master in “Industrial social work” (1.5-2 years), 

  • Doctor for “Social work” (3-4 years)  

 

  1. Program purpose:

 

Program purpose lays in preparing professionals who possess wide knowledge of social work science, proficient to practice knowledge of the latest social work service, methods, and technologies, are continuously improving their skills in accordance with social changes and innovations,  capable of working with customers (individual, family, organization, public), able to do research on social issues, skilled in communication, and ethical in social work field. 

 

  1. Professional definition:

 

Social work is a profession based on practical implications directed to support social solidarity and social changes and innovations, to ensure human rights, freedom, and to empower them. It values social justice, collective responsibility, and individual differences. 

 

  1. Program significance and advantages:

 

  • The university is the first university to prepare social work professionals in Mongolia, 

  • Permitted to hold Bachelor, Master, and Doctor degree programs, 

  • 80% of the professors’ team is of Doctor (Ph. D) degree,

  • Cooperation contracts with social service organizations and universities in Korea and Japan for students to do practice are made, 

  • Hold the most graduates of “Social work” program in Mongolia and alumni network,

  • Versatile to work in “people” sectors of both public and business organizations,

  • Opportunities for students to continue their study in local and foreign Master’s or Doctor’s programs not only in social work profession, but also in other social science programs. 

 

  1. Professional knowledge and skills to be possessed:

  • Theoretical knowledge to explain natures of society, social communication, social psychology, and social development,

  • Knowledge of theories and models to explain and solve issues in different levels (individual, family, public, social group, local unit, and society), and skills to apply them in practice, 

  • Systematic knowledge, skills, and practice to do research and situation assessment, and further, to define customer and social issues, to plan, implement, distribute service, and to complete, control, and evaluate the service. 

  • Wide range of knowledge and skills like, professional commitment, ethics, personal management, and teamwork skills are possessed by the students at the time of graduation.

  1. Profession’s labor market and future prospects:

The profession’s labor market is continually widening not only in Mongolia, but also in different countries of the world. Social-psychological vital problems are of high numbers starting from individual and family levels to organizations, local units, countries, and worldwide.  They are all in need of effective solution. Social workers have been working in the front line in this. Social work is appropriately one of the most futuristic professions that can serve in government and non-government organizations, civil society organizations, international organizations and projects in accordance with world tendencies and social purpose of our country to establish humanitarian, civil, and democratic society.
